Getting God’s Heart for Justice, Mercy, and Racial Reconciliation

“He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.”

(Micah 6:8 NIV)

In recent weeks our country has been shaken once again by racial tension and strife. The unjust deaths of black Americans breaks God’s heart and reveals once again our need for God’s mercy, grace and power to heal human hearts and open our eyes to see every person
as God does.

Jesus came to establish God’s kingdom here on earth as it is in heaven. The day is coming when all people will gather together around the throne of God, people from every tribe, tongue, language and nation ( Revelation 5:9-10). That is Jesus’ vision for His church and it will come to pass. Jesus calls us to pursue His mandate to make disciples of all the nations and join Him as agents of reconciliation, love, mercy, justice and hope.

There is no quick fix. There is no simple human solution. But there is a way — the Way of Jesus. This is the way of the cross where we lay down our rights and privileges, take up the cross, and follow Jesus wherever he leads. As followers of Jesus we recognize that every human being possesses inestimable value in God’s sight. Just imagine what our world would be like if we saw each person the way God does.

A PLACE TO START

Bob Pierce, founder of World Vision and Samaritan’s Purse, wrote a simple prayer on the flyleaf of his Bible: “ Let my heart be broken with the things that break the heart of God.”

Racism and injustice break God’s heart. We become blind and numb to the injustice around us and we need God to open our eyes and soften our hearts. We need God to help us see people the way He does and to show us the places where we can be agents of healing and restoration.

NECESSARY ACTION

Micah 6:8 is a call to action. Once God shows us his good way, He calls us to move and join Him in setting things right. God recently opened a door for us to partner with Horizon Church in opening a preschool in the building that was the former home of Vinewood. This
is an opportune moment to partner with God to serve families in an under-resourced part
of our city and do the work of healing and restoration. I’m excited to see what God is going
to do in the days ahead.

May God give you grace, perseverance and strength to walk through the open doors he places before you to be an agent of reconciliation in these days.
